Cat owners: Iams recalls canned cat food

The Procter & Gamble Co. is recalling Iams ProActive Health canned cat and kitten food in 3-ounce and 5.5-ounce cans that expire September 2011 to June 2012.

Tests have shown the food contains insufficient levels of Vitamin B1, which is essential to feline health. Cats that eat only this canned food are at risk of developing thiamin deficiency. Symptoms include loss of appetite, salivation, vomiting, weight loss, downward curving of the neck, wobbly gait, falling, circling and seizures. Typically, thiamin deficiency can be reversed.

For more information or a product refund, call the company toll-free at 877-340-8826.

What is your pet eating?

Results from a recent Harris Interactive survey found that 77% of dogs and cats eat crumbs off the floor and that 23% of cats and 16% of dogs drink from the toilet. So be sure that you do not have anything harmful drop on the floor that could be ingested by your pet, including tobacco and medicines. Also be careful of what type of floor cleaners you use.

When using toilet cleaners be sure and use non-toxic ones (read the label) or keep the lid down on the toilet.
